Act III: Future Weather – dedication is beautiful

May 9, 2012
By

I first heard about Future Weather in 2009 at an IgnitePhilly event.

Writer/director Jenny Deller and Kristin Fairweather spoke about the film’s premise: a young girl, whose mother abandons her, finds solace in science and protecting the environment.

Here was a female creative team who had completely embraced the risks – I’m talking real life entrepreneurial “sweat equity” – of turning a dream into reality.

Their vision really spoke to me.  You see, earlier that year, I had quit my day job to start nonpretentious, a pop culture website where people (my friends, mostly) could showcase their work.

After their five minutes was up, I’m not sure how but I worked up the nerve to ask Jenny for an interview.

I felt totally elated when she agreed.

But then I missed itTwice.

I’m not sure why.  Thinking back to that time, I’m sure it had something to do with sleepless nights or restless anxiety.

I was a beginner at scheduling, researching and writing stories.  Not to mention, I was still learning how to “build a brand.”  (Even if nonpretentious didn’t go as planned and it was the HuffPo that AOL acquired in 2011 for over $300 million… when I had to go back and find a real job.  This time one utilizing my new journalism skills.)

Either way, I thought I blew it at a crucial learning stage of my career.

But, Jenny was super understanding and fit me into her schedule a short time later.  She showed me how to be a professional – which, yes, of course, means showing up to appointments when promised…. but also means understanding that collaborators are human, especially newbies.

So, here it is almost three years later and I’m down to the wire… but I’d love to ask any and all nonpretentious readers (hello?  Hello?  Anyone still out there?) to support this environmentally-friendly film.

In April, the film made its international debut at the 2012 Tribeca Film Festival starring Perla Haney-Jardine and now it’s in the last hours of the Kickstarter project to recoup post-production costs.

But, more importantly, to support its totally awesome filmmakers who have never waivered from pursuing their dreams.  (Can we say Netflix FIND Your Voice competition semi-finalist and Showtime Tony Cox Screenwriting Award?  What, what?)

They made their goal already but every small amount helps!!

And who continue to inspire those of us who are still trying to find our voices.

As Jenny Deller once said:  ”But if you are patient and trust yourself, your impulse will teach you what’s important to you as a storyteller and can force to you make stronger choices.”

Election 2012: Perry and Huntsman disappear

My friend and I debated about whether a Romney-Huntsman ticket would be a threat to Obama 2012.  What do you think?

It’s 2012!

January 16, 2012
By

You know what that means.  No, not the End of the World, silly.  It’s an election year!

To give you a sports metaphor, right now, the G.O.P. candidates are much like the AFC’s Baltimore Ravens and New England Patriots or the NFC’s New York Giants and San Francisco 49ers, fighting for their conference teams’ championship title.

So, who are these candidates and what do they represent?

We’re Americans and we hardly know either!

Over the next few posts, we thought we’d show you (sorta) what they look like and how they (say they) stand.

This way, you can (say you) recognize them on the news or speak (sorta) knowledgeably if you hear their names in conversation.

Please add any of your thoughts, informative links, or useless rumors in the comments.

2 Sentence Review: Terri (Film)

November 21, 2011
By

TerriI wish that Terri (played by Jacob Wysocki) went to my high school and I wish that Mr. Fitzgerald (played by John C. Reilly) was my assistant principal.  I’d hate to take gym with Mr. Flemisch (played by Tim Heidecker) and I’m glad I never did.

Labor Day Means Workin’ the Television

September 5, 2011
By

Ah, good ol’ Labor Day.

While Obama’s out in the Motor City praising the unions and the middle class

While the American workers at Ford contemplate whether to go on strike (turns out, they should’ve taken the bailout money, news reports say)…

And while Michele Bachmann terrifies us with gloom and doom of a jobless country, I say this to all busy little bee Americans:

Let’s celebrate industrious workers the best way we know how… It’s time to kick our heels up and watch some television!

Here’s what’s been keeping me busy on Labor Day:

New Girl

First, if you haven’t seen the sneak peek of Zooey Deschanel‘s new show on Fox, watch it now!  For all of you Comcast/Xfinity customers out there, the first episode is OnDemand. You can also see the trailer or buy the season pass on Amazon.

While I may be too old for a comedy about 20-somethings living in NYC, trying to get into all the cool parties, I’ll never be too old to learn from Zooey’s fashion. I mean, she *is* older than me. PS/ Love the douchebag jar. It should be required in a lot of scenarios.

True Blood Season 4

Okay, okay.  I know season 2 and season 3 were a little tedious to watch at times.  The show went overboard with sex scenes (orgies?), ridiculous love triangles, and Bill Compton declaring how much he needs Sookie.  (Heck, Bill repeated her name so much that Sookie had to mimick him.)

But!  Season 4 is watch-worthy.  I’m not sure if it’s because Jessica has more screen time, Bill’s with other women, or Tara has become Tony but they’re doing something right.

Like always, True Blood is also really good at social commentary, including the bit about the Vatican and Google and the camera phones capturing vampire-on-human violence.  (You’ll just have to watch to see what I mean.)

Project Runway Season 9

Not only are the personalities so bratty and amazing (see: Bert Keeter and Joshua McKinley) but the clothes are also on Amazon.com!

(Although, I think the originally designed maxi dress by Anya Ayoung-Chee looks better than the one for sale.  I do like Viktor Luna’s short crinkle dress and jacket.)

The one for sale

Original

The stripe is the best part!

My personal favorite?  Anthony Ryan.  (Don’t visit the page if you don’t want spoilers.)

Other goodies? Breaking Bad, Louie, & Curb

So, I just have to ask:  What are you watching?
