The GaGa and The Big Day

Lady Ga-Ga ‘Poker Face’

I am *in love* with this song and it will be totally played at my wedding, even if the old folks are still enjoying the party. who knows…they might love it to. probably not.

oh..and did I mention that the big day is in 41 days. i am still pretty sane, which is helpful to the soon to be hubs, I suppose. I could be quite annoying to live with, if I fell off the rocker now. I guess if he has not run screaming in the past almost 6 years, it is not going to happen now.

Product Recommendation

…to Add To Your Level of Domesticity…

We happily received our very first wedding gift in the mail last week. It was from our dear friends, A & B. It was an Oster Express Breadmaker. I was super excited when this was added to our registry, because just the idea of making my own bread sounded so very…..domestic. And I am not one who has a history of being overly domestic, but I am taking the months leading up to my pending nuptials (only 2 more months to go!) to get some extra practice in.

I used it for the first time this past weekend when my parents came up to visit us. For dinner on Saturday night, we decided to have various forms of meats, mashed potatoes, salad, and then to top it all off, fresh bread! My first batch was French bread, and it was absolutely delicious, and simple to make! There were very few ingredients (bread flour, water, olive oil, sugar, and yeast). The *only* drawback (and I really do not consider it one) is that it takes 3 hours and 50 minutes to make it. So, planning is involved, but that is what being domestic is right, planning ahead? :)

The best part of it is that there is a time delay timer, so you can have it start while you are out (doing…outside…domestic things!) and come home to the invigorating smell of fresh bread.

In short, I highly recommend this product, easy to use, the end product tastes great, and it is relatively inexpensive.

Hint for Show and Tell: It Blows things Up

I now subscribe to NPR’s *free* podcast “Wait Wait…Don’t Tell me!” I listened to the two most recent segments during my commute this morning, and heard a story I just had to share. I recommend these podcasts because a) they are informative (i.e. I did get caught up on current events, albeit some were minor and unimportant, but current nonetheless? and b) i did get a few chuckles here and there. I have found it really hard to laugh at comics, and I have no idea why.

The 11.17.08 podcast spoke of this most recent event that took place in Akron, OH, where a kindergarten student brought in a hand grenade for show and tell. Here is the short article from The Plain Dealer Reporter:

AKRON — A kindergartner here wowed more than his classmates today when he brought a hand grenade to show-and-tell, fire officials said.

The 5-year-old stood before curious classmates at Seiberling Elementary School on Brittian Road and asked them to guess what he had in his bookbag.

His clue was that the object could blow things up, said Akron schools spokeswoman Karen Ingraham.

The teacher grabbed the bag and saw the hand grenade. She alerted the principal who called out police and fire officials.

The school was evacuated until fire officials determined the hand grenade was a “dummy” that looked real but was no longer activated, said Fire Department Spokesman John Gordon.

Such dummy grenades can be bought at army surplus stores.

Ingraham said the student’s parents were alerted. Schools officials will determine whether the child will face any disciplinary action but Ingraham said considering his young age she doubted there was any criminal intent in his actions.

Students returned to classrooms today.

Not that we should joke about bombs in schools these days, but I just had to laugh. I would give anything to see the faces of the teacher and the school admins when this student pulled it out of the bag. And whatever happened to the days when children ran by their parents what they were bringing to show and tell? Or, God forbid, was this suggested by a parent? It does smell like something an older sibling might suggest.

I racked my brain to try and remember what I brought in for show and tell, and I honestly do not remember! Maybe a stuffed animal or a random Barbie (or Ninja turtle, depending on the year) but nothing sticks out in my head.

What about you?

My *Most* Serious Injury

I have a problem.

I want to contribute to this site, but I never know what to write. I am not the most creative out of the bunch, nor the best well spoken, nor the smartest. I am just me and sometimes *I* think that is a little boring. I read my fellow contributor’s posts and am in awe. I wonder, “How did they think of that?” or “What a great idea!” I guess you could say this was a sign of a low self-esteem. But who doesn’t have that? I just want to be interesting, so I thought I would try this out for awhile.

I googled “writer’s block” and after a few tweeking moments, I came across this site. I read down some of his list, and thought that this would be a good place to start. In the end, you can’t get better at writing without writing, so as long as I am writing, I should get better at it? Ha. I’ll let you be the judge of that one. Continue reading…

Are you a-w-a-r-e?

How many?

Check out the above video (courtesy of YouTube). I apologize if you have seen it before. It has been floating around YouTube and made its way onto some morning news programs. I found it very interesting, and pretty true to human nature. I would share, but I don’t want to give anything away. Let me know how you do…

*sidenote*: is there any way that I can put the video directly into my post, instead of linking to YouTube? I could not figure it out.

Confessions of pizza and cake

We had a going away party at work today. One of my co-workers (V.) is starting a new job on Monday, with, surprisingly, a financial institution. I was unaware that anybody was hiring right now, let alone financial companies. K. brought in pizza (from Pizza Hut, my favorite!) and cake for lunch today (so much for sticking to the plan to drop a few pounds before the wedding day), to celebrate, and I was proud of myself because I saw her carrying the cake and pizza, and instead of ignoring her and getting mad that I did not know what she was celebrating, and letting it get to me that I was somehow not invited (mass emails are sent around the office for these group celebrations, and I had not received one), I asserted myself and asked her what was going on. She told me that we were celebrating V.’s going away, and asked me if I got the email. I said, no, and laughed, and she felt bad that it did not reach me. She thought I was joking, and I do think a part of her felt bad. Maybe. I just brushed it aside, helped her carry everything, and enjoyed the celebration.

The old me would have secretly held it against K. for not personally inviting me, and my mind would race wondering if there were people in the office who secretly did not like me. You know, conspiracies are so in right now. Ha.

But, the new me knows that there are bigger things in life, and no, not everyone is out to get me. Sometimes it is best to just let the little things go…and enjoy pizza and cake. Now, for an afternoon nap (not).

Speaking of birthdays…

They aren’t always happy.

I started at my new job a little more than six months ago, and couldn’t be happier with my decision. My current position is a traveling one, so I am not at my “home” base consistently. I *pretty* much know all of my co-workers [it is pretty small, not more than 25 of us]. As per usual, there is a protocol when it comes to celebrating birthdays. There is the *coveted* list hanging in the kitchen, listing everyone’s birthday, grouped by month, and next to it, it lists their name, and what their *ideal* birthday food would be. Some pick apple pie, others ice cream cake, etc. Since I have not been here a full year, I was inducted into the birthday extravaganza today.

Over the weekend, while I traveled a total of almost 800 miles round trip for a wedding of dear friends, I received a message via  facebook that it was my turn to bring in a cake, but I was not provided with her name or what she wanted. The reason I was notified on FB was because I had not been there the previous week due to another assignment. Being the kind-hearted person that I am, I agreed. This would mean that I would have to give up half of my lunch break and run out to Hannaford’s, hope that they had the kind of cake she wanted *and* that they would be able to write on it all in a very short period of time. Oh, and I had to pick up a card. In the end, I was successful, and I rushed back to work with said cake and card in hand.

I find out, after lunch, that my birthday buddy has indeed taken the day off and our celebration would have to be delayed until tomorrow. Arg. Figures. But, cakes do survive the night, so NBD.

Today, I was all prepared for the anticipated celebration at 3:00 P.M. Unfortunately, I was stuck in court until 3:20, and I was hoping that somebody else would find the cake and take care of things. This did happen, but here is the kicker: it turns out my beloved birthday buddy came over, cut pieces for herself and her people [she works across the hall from us...same office though] and left before anyone could sing happy birthday. No thank -yous, or anything. I truly felt the love for all my hard work and running around.

But…at least I got cake out of it.

Here’s to an enjoyable evening watching the 2nd Presidential debate, town-meeting style. Let’s see if John McCain can muster making eye contact with Obama tonight.
