Cover v. Original: Goodbye Girl

It’s been way too long since we’ve had a runoff between an original song and its cover version.

As a reminder, Cover v. Original works like this:  A contributor presents covers and originals in a post.  Readers debate over which is better in the comments.  Final verdict is given about one week later.

This week’s song choice comes to you from Levi’s Pioneer Sessions, a project in which current, pioneering artists cover a song that inspires them.  I first heard about the project at one of my favorite blogs, Pulp and Circumstance.  Once I perused the archives, I was super intrigued by The Shins cover of “Goodbye Girl” by Squeeze.  The Shins?  Haven’t heard anything from them in awhile.  And someone once told me that “Goodbye Girl” is the only good song by Squeeze.  Fuck the Reality Bites soundtrack.

So, what do you think?  Cover or the original?  You can download the cover version on this page (e-mail address required). You can also download the mp3 of Squeeze’s version on Amazon or iTunes.

Leave your comments on our Facebook wall or on this post.  I’ll let you know my opinion next week.

Original. And the version you posted isn’t even my favorite: the one on *Singles 45′s and Under* is even snappier, and in that one she moves to Boston, not Seattle.

The Shins one is fine, but you can tell it’s the cover even if you didn’t know the song. Perhaps it will grow on me with repeated listens. I’ve only heard it once, and the other, about 1000 times.

Original. I agree with Matt. This version by The Shins is underwhelming. Squeeze has an original arrangement that is just warm and full. It’s fantastic.
