Cover v. Original: Map Ref 41°N 93°W

A special version of Cover v. Original in honor of the twin highlights of my year. In this corner, Wire’s original “Map Ref 41°N 93°W“. In the other corner, My Bloody Valentine’s cover of the song. A classic pop song, “Map Ref 41°N 93°W” was released as a single b/w “Go Ahead” in October...

This Is Your Correspondent…

On friday night I saw Wire here in Philadelphia at Johnny Brenda’s. I had been looking forward to this for awhile. It was one of my all-time favorite bands, playing in a nice, small venue. Even though it’s been over thirty years since the band was formed, they did not disappoint.

Good v. Well May Irk Me but I ain’t No Grammar Girl

October 13, 2008
By

Those near & dear to my heart hate me for correcting their “I’m doing good” or “I think I did good on my test.”  Eeeeeeeeeek.  That way of speaking is as melodic as nails scratching down a blackboard. Contrary to popular opinion, however, I am not a pro when it comes to grammar (cf....

Cover v. Original Verdict: Lost in the Supermarket

October 11, 2008
By

Our readers have overwhelmingly voted for the Clash (3-1). I knew this would happen. In fact, it’s the whole reason I proposed this song. I’m subversive like that. Here’s the deal. The Clash are good. Damn good. I mean phenomenally good. “Lost in the Supermarket” is one of my favorite songs. But what I’m...

Over here at nonpretentious, we like to write to the people who inspire us. (see: Letters to Inspiring Writers). In Honor of History of Film Class….

October 8, 2008

They aren’t always happy. I started at my new job a little more than six months ago, and couldn’t be happier with my decision. My current position is a traveling one, so I am not at my “home” base consistently. I *pretty* much know all of my co-workers [it is pretty small, not more...

The Work of Art in the Age of Mechanical Reproduction

October 7, 2008
By

Can  a moment of sporting brilliance be considered art? I think this video makes it clear. For a brief moment on saturday Zlatan Ibrahimović  was not just an athlete, but an artist. Who would have imagined that the lovechild of Walker, Texas Ranger and Edgar Degas would be so beautiful?

Being Illiterate is Underrated.

October 6, 2008
By

… I, Lonnie, purveyor of all things pop-ee and smutty, am calling for an unlearning of written language as means of communication. I want mass book burnings.  I want the internet to consist of pictures and 2-d flash games.  I want no one  to appreciate this sentence: Though she lapped at my stinky balls...
