“Like something between a dog howling and a baby crying”

There was a story in the news a few days ago about a man being violently stabbed and decapitated aboard a greyhound bus by a fellow passenger. A witness described the victim’s screams as being “like something between a dog howling and a baby crying”, (unecessarily) adding that “I don’t think it will leave me for a while.” The victim, a carny and a juggalo according to some, was asleep when Vincent Li attacked, swiftly and without warning. Canadians, known throughout the world for their superstitious and arcane beliefs, immediately assumed the horrific crime was the work of a Windigo, a terrifying beast of Canadian mythology with a “ravenous appetite for human flesh“. Whatever the case may be, it reminded me of a song by Lee Hazlewood called “Greyhound Bus Depot” and its oh-so accurate line “The lonesomest place in the world I know / is 4 o’clock in the morning / in a Greyhound Bus depot.” Here’s the playlist I came up with to tell this sad tale:

01. Lee Hazlewood & Ann Margaret – Greyhound Bus Depot (3:41)
02. The Hung Jury – Buses (2:18)
03. Sonic Youth – Schizophrenia (4:38)
04. Talking Heads – Psycho Killer (4:21)
05. The Stooges – Death Trip (6:07)
06. The Koobas – The First Cut Is The Deepest (3:06)
07. Beck – Fuckin’ With My Head (Mountain Dew Rock) (3:41)
08. Roxy Music – Flesh and Blood (3:13)
09. Stereolab – How To Play Your Internal Organs Overnight (3:58)
10. Sonic Boom – Help Me Please (4:42)
11. Super Furry Animals – The International Language of Screaming (2:14)
12. Red House Painters – Lord Kill The Pain (6:02)
13. Xinlisupreme – All You Need Is Love Was Not True (8:29)
14. John Cale – Sudden Death (4:39)
15. Eugene McDaniels – Headless Heroes (3:34)
16. Ferrante And Teicher – Canadian Sunset (2:44)
