Dichord Joins The Party

First of all I should say that I’m very happy to be here at nonpretentious. The name says it all. These guys are covering all the bases and in a great and accessible way. I can already tell that I’ll probably be spending more time than I should on this site checking in on what everyone else is doing. I’ve just returned to Dallas Texas to finish my degree and that means that I am 1) going to have a rather limited amount of free time and 2) am officially a no good free-loader again. Yup, I’ve got no car, no bed, no computer, and no desk out here. Last week i walked around my apartment complex with a borrowed lap top begging people for their wireless internet passwords so i could get my blogging fix. My computer situation will be changing but not for a week or two so my entries here should become a little more consistent in the future. But if you don’t hear from me internet it’s not that I don’t love you, I’m probably out there trying to beat up some kid and take his laptop.

There has been one consolation to my new immobile lifestyle and that has been the Dischord online store. Continue reading…

How Toxic Are You? Or, why you shouldn't accept flyers on the street

I work in a building in the center of the city in which I live. In fact, to make it easier for verbose people like me, the part of the city in which I work is known to many as “center city.”

In this place called center city, my building’s corner is like the red light district for marketers. This past spring, it seemed like every day I came into work with a bag of free goodies that they were handing out on the street. Free stuff is always awesome. I got caffeinated water, Red Bulls, cereal, M&M ice cream. Actually, scratch that. Free stuff is usually awesome. Two weeks ago, they were handing out free samples of cat food. Cat food? Seriously? That took it one step too far.

Earlier this week, I walked to work and on my corner there was a dude handing out pieces of paper. The first thing that popped into my mind was the Mitch Hedberg joke: “Whenever I walk, people try to hand me out flyers. And when someone tries to hand me out a flyer, it’s kinda like they’re saying, ‘Here—you throw this away.’”

But…in marketing land a piece of paper isn’t just a piece of paper… Continue reading…

the rut of half read books & half written letters

some of you may know that my (self-imposed) goal for the year is to read 50 books.

You can see what i’ve read here. In addition to those books, I have about 7 other books that are half complete. I used to have an OCD manager who told me that I needed to work on my follow-through. It’s definitely true. I’m a starter, an inspirer, and to finish…well, that’s a lie. i finish strong…i’m a procrastinator who some how gets it done by the deadline. naturally, it’s just this damn middle part of the year – July & August – that’s killing me.

Fuck Fuck Fuck

Goddamnit.

I’m so fucking pissed. I missed the Obama speech and I can’t find it online anywhere. CNN has it all broken up into cute little sound bites with parts missing. CSPAN has some fucked up quicktime shit that isn’t working on my quicktime player. The DNC website has some state-of-the-art HD player that only plays on fucking OS Tiger or Jaguar…Jesus. what the fuck happened to giving the people what they need. There’s a whole new sort of elitism happening on the web. If you don’t have the newest fucking computer/iPhone you can’t watch shit.

I’m about to destroy something. I’m exploding! AAAAARRRRGGGGHHHH!

Update

Thanks to Jenna! for alleviating my freak out session. I just watched the speech and it’s fantastic. It’s so exciting! And yes, Fortuna Koln, it is a speech by a politician. But it’s not just any speech. It shouldn’t matter who you support in the election, or even if you don’t support either major party candidate. What makes this different, what makes this special, is it’s the first time in the history of our nation that a person of color has been nominated by a major political party for the office of the president of the United States of America. It’s History! That’s exciting, to be a witness to history! So far in my life, most of the major historical events I’ve witnessed have been tragedies: Challenger explosion, 9/11, Iraq War, Katrina, and Kobain. And most of them have been inextricably linked to politics. So to be able to witness this event is great for me, it’s extraordinary. It’s pretty damn exciting.

But sure, I understand, it doesn’t have to be for you. That’s fine. I’m just tired of being a cynic. I’ve been a cynic for the last eight years and it’s been exhausting. There’s all these alarms going off in my brain saying “Don’t buy into the Hope, the Change, it’s just empty talk like the last years. Your heart will be broken again. You will want to move to Canada, again. We should have gotten out of here a long time ago.” But damn, it feels so good to let all that pessimism go and just believe that someone might actually start us down a new path. And trust me, I’m not an idiot. I don’t expect any administration to “fix” our problems. But just to make a turn and start walking down a different path, a slightly better path is something to look forward to. So that’s what I’m doing, I’m looking forward.

But yeah, sorry about the freakout session and profanity prayers. I probably should have waited more than a half hour for the video to posted to the Interwebs in an easily accessible location and format. What can say, I expect a lot from technology. I’m still waiting for those pills you put in a microwave and you have an instant turkey dinner. I guess this will have to do in the interim:

Delicious.
